We will be delving into a new series these next few weeks.
The #1 most important task given to parents is the raising up of our children. Why did such amazing patriarchs such as King David have such a dysfunctional family? David was given a monumental claim, being the man after God's own heart. Could it be that, as the king of Israel, David mistook the priority of ministry? We know little about the training of his children. However, we know the result of his fatherhood.
One son raped his sister. Another killed his brother that raped his sister. Yet another son tried to take the kingdom from his father. Another tried to manipulate his way into kingship from his brother after his father had died. What went wrong?
The raising up of our children, the incredible task we are gifted.
On the flip side, why was Job so successful as a father? "When these celebrations ended--sometimes after several days--Job would purify his children. He would get up early in the morning and offer a burnt offering for each of them. For Job said to himself, "Perhaps my children have sinned and have cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's regular practice."
Job put his task of being a parent first in his life. His prioritized ministry was his family. It was his regular practice to purify his children. Not that his children had sinned but just in case. His children's relationship with the Lord was a constant assignment. And Job played the undertaking perfectly.
Likewise, we are set before us an incredible task. Ministry begins in the home. Our first priority for ministry should always be our family. Therefore we have before us an antithesis. Do we become a Job or a David? "Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court."
Let us start now, in our rooms for war, rising up in our children the good fight of faith. In this series, we will learn just that. To war in prayer over specific areas of our children's lives that the enemy will and is trying to steel, kill, and destroy. The enemy would not be fighting them if they were not made for righteous things. Our children pose a threat to they enemy and his plans. Let us scare the daylights out of the enemy.
